On 1 October 1960, the unit was redesifgnated as the 244th Radio Relay Squadron, having been know as the 244th GEEIA Squadron for just twenty-one months.
In 1960, the 244th deployed to McClellan AFB, California for annual field training.
On 11 April 1960 Major Garvin was assigned to leave the 244th Radio Relay Squadron and Major Vernon E. Black was assigned to replace him. On 13 April 1960 Major Black assumed command and was the commander until 9 May 1960 when the 11 April action was recinded. Major Black was "Commander for a Day", 28 days to be exact.
