In August 1963, the 244th participated in Longhaul II, a communications exercise which included units across the states. radio relay system stretched from McChord AFB to Yakima Military Reservation via Crawford Mountain Lookout and Bebe Mountain in Washington to TVOR, Portland International Airport, Mt. Hood, Shaniko and Condon AFS, Oregon to Bickleton and Yakima Ridge, Washington. Two relay sites were operated by the 221st Radio Relay Squadron, Garland Texas.
A Letter of Appreciation was received from the 252nd Communications Group, LtCol Ahrens, Commander, which stated:
"It is my pleasure to express my appreciation to the Commander, 244th Radio Relay Squadron, Oregon Air National Guard, for support given the Group during exercise Longhaul II.
LtCol Garvin's squadron did an outstanding job in providing reliable FM communications circuitry between McChord AFB and the Yakima Firing Center. Worthy of commendation was the excellent logistical planning that made every mission objective a reality and the unselfish assistance given to the 221st Radio Relay Squadron from the state of Texas in the performance of its assigned mission.
Again, it is my pleasure to convey my appreciation and sincerest compliments to the 244th Radio Relay Squadron for a job well done."
Major General Haskett, Adjutant General, Military Department, State of Washington, endorsed the letter by stating, "I have been advised by my staff that the efforts of LtCol Garvin and his organization greatly enhanced the accomplishment of the field training exercise. It is with a great deal of pleasure that I forward this letter."
Brigadier General Anderson, Adjutant General, Military Department, State of Oregon, endorsed the letter by writing. "It is with pleasure that I add my compliments to those of LtCol Ahrens and General Haskett. The 244th Radio Relay Squadron and LtCol Garvin have earned the respect and admiration of all who have been associated with their work."
Bridadier General Doolittle, Chief of Staff, Oregon Air National Guard, also endorsed the letter by stating, "The professionalism displayed by your unit during this year's annual field training and the spirit of cooperation referred to in the basic letter reflect great credit on you and all of the members of your unit. It is a pleasure to add my commendation and congratulations to those expressed in the basic letter and preceding endorsements."
Technical Sergeant Gene A. Katke received recognition as the Outstanding Unit Airman, and was selected as the Oregon Air National Guard Outstanding Airman of 1963
