The unit sent personnel in suport of Operation Southern Watch to Saudi Arabia.
In April the unit deployed to the State Capitol in Salem, Oregon to link the Oregon Military Department Emergency Operations Center to the Oregon Emergency Management Office and the State Capitol Building with phone and data services.
For annual field training the unit deployed to Camp Rilea for the 252nd Combat Communications Group exercise Readiness 97 for a week of classroom training and a week of field operations.
JANUARY 11-12 UTA This was a Commanders Option UTA . Drivers Training, Physicals, Shots, Commisary Priviledge Cards, and the quarterly OJT meeting were conducted before Commanders Call on Sunday of the UTA.
FEBRUARY 1-2 UTA This was a 36-Hour In-Garrison Exercise, Eagle Ace-97-2 . Our mission during the operation was to Install, Operate, and maintain a satellite point-to-point link with 143 CBCS. Command will be exercised through the mini CFP, all non-operational maintenance activities will be coordinated through job control.
MARCH 1-2 UTA This was a Commanders Option UTA and it was utilized to load tailored loads for road mobility to support April 97, 96-Hour Exercise.
APRIL 4-7 Was designated as a 96-Hour deployment (FALCON ACE 97-04) in support of a simulated State of Oregon Military Department Emergency Operations Center tasking to provide voice , data, and computer network services between the ORANG primary and alternate EOC’s and the Oregon Emergency Management Office’s primary and alternate EOC’s. DCS SATCOM access to the military AUTODIN, NIPRET, and SIPRNET system was also tasked. Commercial communications services between these agencies are simulated as being degraded to the point of being unusable.

JUNE 14-15 This UTA was utilized to Train, Maintain , and Equip all personnel for taskings.
JULY 12-27 This Was Annual Field Training named Readiness ’97. The Units mission for Readiness ’97 was to ensure that the maximum number of unit personnel complete requiring SORTS reportable training so they can be counted toward the unit’s overall readiness status. The 244th deployed to Camp Rilea, OR. Convoy Route movement was coordinated by Vehicle Maintenance with appropriate agencies. Our Friendly Forces were Units of the 252 CCGP. Our assumptions were that there would be no hostile activity. Enemy threat was not applicable for this exercise. IM personnel deployed to Camp Murray for admin training.
AUGUST -NO UTA
SEPTEMBER 20-21 All Sections put a high priority on completion of initial and refresher Chemical Warfare Defense Training (CWDT) for personnel who didn’t receive the training during Annual Field Training .
OCTOBER 4-5 This was a modified in-garrison 36-Hour exercise designed to provide maximum training for wideband systems installation and allow time for realistic operations training. Sections not participating in the operational phase of the 36-Hour exercise will be undergoing section training and be working normal shifts. The primary focus of this exercise was to install, operate, and maintain a TRC-170 microwave relay system from the 244thCBCS to the 143rd CBCS . Other facilities were minimally manned. All sections developed a training plan that covered support for the operation along with contingencies when curcrits were not established.
NOVEMBER 15-16 This was also a 36-Hour In-Garrison Exercise designed to provide maximum allowable time for realistic operations training. The Primary Focus of the exercise was to install, operate, and maintain a network system with other units participating in the Crown Royale exercise. The Ground \Comm Section conducted an electrical survey between Salem and Mt Livingston, Wa. All sections should develop a training plan that covers support for the operation along with the contingencies.
DECEMBER 6-7 This was a Commanders Option UTA . Utilized to Train, Maintain and Equip all personnel for taskings.
