Lt Colonel Keith E. Hallmark assumed command of the 244th Combat Communications Squadron on 1 October 1983.
The 244th Combat Communications Squadron Received an Excellent for the Management Effectiveness Inspection (MEI) conducted by Headquarters, Air Force Communications Command (AFCC) . This was the second consecutive "excellent" rating for an MEI. The 244th also received the Certificate of Excellence in Administration.
On 11 April, eight personnel deployed to West Raynham, United Kingdom, for participation in NATO exercise Flintlock 83.
Personnel from the 244th also participated in NATO JCS exercise Distant Drum 83, beginning 3 May, and deployed to Neq Makri, Greece; Torrejon, Spain; Gioia del Colle, Italy; Eskishir and Incerlik, Turkey.
In July, three members of the 244th deployed to March AFB, California, for participation in Strategic Air Command exercise Global Shield 83. They augmented the exercise with a TSC-60 Communications Control and Maintenance Team.
Deploying to Greece and Spain, personnel from the 244th also participated in exercise Coronet Moat 83. 244th personnel also participated in exercise Cold Fire 83 in Germany.
Technical Sergeant Robert L. Jeffery was selected as the Outstanding Unit Senior Airman, and Master Sergeant Fred J. Vogel was named as the Outstanding Unit Senior NCO of 1983.
