Personnel from the 244th CCSQ participated in Combat Challenge 89 and seven JCS/NATO exercises.
The 252nd CCG was tasked to support exercise WINTEX-CIMEX at locations in Turkey, Germany and the United Kingdom. 244th personnel and equipment were deployed to Balekishir and Sivrihisar, Turkey, Lindsey AFS, Germany, and Mildenhall AFB, United Kingdom.
Personnel from the 244th also participated in exercise Open Gate in Spain.
Members of the Squadron participated in AFT 1.2.3.4.5., an Annual Field Training exercise held at Lindsey AFS, Germany. This was a 1st Combat Communications Group-sponsored exercise. Personnel who were assigned to this location performed duty as a processing point for other exercises operating in Europe.
Coronet Anaconda, an exercise which was conducted at Evenes AS, Norway, had members of the 244th participating.
244th personnel deployed to Denmark for exercise TFW OKSBOEL 89, conducted at Karup AS, Denmark. This was a NATO exercise operated jointly by the Royal Danish Air Force Headquarters, Tactical Air Command, and a United States Air Force Tactical Air Control System.
The 252nd CCG was tasked to support exercise Disply Determination 89. Personnel from the 244th deployed to sites in northwestern Turkey, providing tactical air control support for air operations.
Two exercises were conducted at Gioia del Colle, Italy, Coronet Krait and Dragon Hammer, with members of the 244th contributing their efforts.
This year, three people were chosen for special recognition by the Squadron: Sergeant Derrick V. Roeske was selected as the Outstanding Unit Airman of 1989. Technical Sergeant Conrad K. Spens Jr. ws recognized as the Outstanding Unit Senior Airman of 1989. Master Sergeant Debra M. Churnside was named as the Outstanding Unit Senior NCO of 1989.
Lt. Col. Keith E. Hallmark retired from technician status this year.
January 1989 - UTA 7-8 January -- in-garrison 36-hour
Designed to provide maximum allowable time for realistic operations training. Maximum use of the lease land line to the 262 CCSQ for the 244 CCSQ was planned. Primary emphasis was on training operations shift personnel.

March 1989 - UTA 4-5 March -- Commander's Option Training
The UTA was utilized to provide maximum upgrade and proficiency training for all unit personnel. Shots were given on both Saturday and Sunday to unit personnel as needed.

April 1989 - UTA 1-2 April -- Commander's Option Training
This UTA was redisignated a Commander's option training period. An HF link was established to participate in the Limeade Net. Specialized and section training will be conducted to meet unit readiness objectives.

July 1989 - UTA 8-9 July -- Commander's Option
This UTA was designated a Commander's Option. The unit used both operational and classroom training to provide realistic training.
An open-ranks inspection was conducted on Sunday, 9 July. The annual Physical Fitness Evaluation was also conducted on this day.
August 1989 - UTA 5-6 August -- 8-hr. Operational Training
UTA was designated an 8-hour operational training period. A lease land line was connected between the 244 TGC-27 and the 256 TGC-27A. An HF link was established to participate in AF-40 Command and Control Net. Specialized and section training was conducted to meet unit readiness objectives.

September 1989 - UTA 9-10 September -- No Host Mobex
The UTA was designated as a No Host Mobex training period in preparation for the 14-15 October 36-hour deployment. All UTC's participated in order to utilize the new warehouse plan. This UTA was utilized to successfully prepare all UTC's for air deployment, reconfiguration for ground deployment using both mobility training concepts and procedures. October 1989 - UTA 14-15 October -- Deployed 36-hour operation
This UTA was a 36-hour operation deployed to Clark County Fair Grounds, Washington. The squadron participated in a 252 CCGP 36-hour employment exercise. The October employment phase was a continuation of the Initial Reponse practice that occured during the September UTA. As directed by the 252 CCGP, the primary purpose of this 36-hour deployment is to regain deployment and employment capabilities.
The 244 CCSQ, along with other units of the 252 CCGP, exercised their deployment, employment and recovery skills during this operation. The primary purpose of this mission was to refamiliarize maintenance and operations personnel with mission requirements in a deployed environment.
Two TRC-97 Microwave Terminals were deployed and positioned at Abernathy Mountain.

November 1989 - UTA 4-5 November -- 8-Hour Operational Training
This UTA was designated an 8-hour operational training period. A lease land line was connected between the 244 CCSQ TGC-27 and the 262 QRP's. Specialized and section training was conducted to meet unit readiness objectives.
Shots were given on Sunday morning.

December 1989 - UTA 2-3 December -- Commander's Option
All sections conducted OJT and qualification training. Records review, BAQ recertification, ID cards, physicals and weight checs were conducted Saturday morning. Shots were given on both Saturday and Sunday.
A mandatory TEMPEST briefing was conducted for all personnel on Saturday and Sunday.
A Squadron Christmas party was held on Saturday evening.
