2002 brought another first for the 244th! The unit was partially mobilized (involuntarily) to support the Air Expeditionary Force (AEF) in Southwest Asia. The unit was selected as the lead unit by the 252nd Combat Communications Group to fill the positions for this mobilization to Al Jaber Air Base, Kuwait. From this deployed element a number were selected to perform temporary duty in Afghanistan to help set up bare base communications at a newly captured airfield.
With a third of the unit deployed the unit concentrated on training for the first half of the year.
Annual Field Training was split between Camp Rilea and Portland Air Base. Mobility Training was one of the major tasks.
In October the unit provided the necessary connectivity to various agencies to demonstrate the units capability in case of a state emergency. Portions of the unit deployed to Salem, Oregon, to Mt. Livingston in Wasington and to Eola Hills in Oregon, with a majority remaining in-garrison at Portland, Oregon. The unit ran a satellite link to the reachback facility at Langley AFB, Virginia.
